History
Dyfed Ponies were established in 1963. By the late Peter Thomas, although horses and ponies had been a big part of his life from an early age. Peter showed his first pony at the age of eight. A farmer and master of foxhounds his first love was the welsh mountain pony.
From our home at Pontsticill the ponies ran on the Brecon Beacons.
The second highest range of mountains in Wales. With over a hundred ponies this was truly a sight to see. Welsh Cobs and Sec C's were also bred under the Cwm prefix at this time. Perhaps the most famous sec C we have bred is Cwm Lowri a Royal Welsh champion
In 1984. The stud moved to The Revel. The ponies ran on the Black Mountains and a neighbouring hill Troed Mynydd totaling over 66,000 acres. The ponies, kept in their natural hill environment enable them to keep their bone and hardiness. After the untimely death of Peter in 1988 it was decided by the family to decrease the number of ponies. So in 1990 a reduction sale was held at the Revel where thirty-four Dyfed ponies were sold.
In 2004 Diana moved to the present home of Dyfed Ponies, Cwmnant near Llandrindod Wells, in the heart of Mid Wales and only a few miles from the Royal Welsh showground.
There are still over forty ponies at the stud today. Dyfed ponies have been exported all over the continent and as far a field as Brazil.
